I am a former Btitish serviceman and remember these trully shocking deaths well. I can`t begin to imagine the fear Cpls Woods and Howes felt as they knew what what was about to happen to them. Royal Signals personnel do and still do carry out lots of covert comms work in sensitive places like NI. They were not, in my view, part of the DET (14 int) because there reactions to their sittuation did not reflect this, plus q cars are fitted with lots of devices to counter a mob surge(flash bangs etc) and they would have used the car as a weapon and been armed with more than a Browning 9mm pistol. Either they were on a jolly in a red zone or they were carrying out low serveilance on possible loyalist paramilitary groups who were clearly in colusion (in my view) with the NI security forces. I feel, personnaly, that Derek and Robert were simp,y victims of an extra ordinarally heightened point of violence and tension following 2 key events (Gibralter and Stone) that culminated with circumsatnce and tragedy. The bigger tragedy, however, is the whole biggoted and pointless mess that NI was and still is. Ireland is a beautiful part of the wold despite the 2 points of view regarding soverenty and religious divide. Many wrongs were evident to the minority Catholic popluation to start with and talking is and negotioation is the only way to solve problems in the world which, when we look at NI now, is clear. I salute Derek and Robert and all the victims of the violence in NI on all sides and I do not seperate any of the groups engaged in the violence that occured. May peace and stability remain in the beutiful 6 counties of NI.

i was there on the day and was part of the group around the car,i was aquitted by a british judge on the grounds of self defence,my heart went out to both soldiers but unfortunately they were in the wrong place at the wrong time, circumstances dictated that they died that day, maybe under other circumstances they would have been treated less severely.they could have killed a lot of people that day themselves and they deserve credit for their discipline in not doing so,its all over now, lets move on.

the savagery of the common folk and republicans that day, will endure in the minds of all who witnessed a truly appalling low point in that sad province's history...all involved will be called to account by the God in whom they profess a belief...
